A SYMBOL OF PROTECTION

This wooden figure is carved by hand and comes from the island of Sumba, made with a human form in honour of the Marapu (ancestral spirits), part of the animistic/ancestral religion in the region. The human figure is an invitation to the Marapu to move inside the statue, believed to protect ones home and to guide its owner through life.

The Marapu are believed to be the occupants of the eternal heaven, living in couples and leading a similar existence to men.

It comes complete with a blackened metal stand and it's story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted each statue its slightly different, and each has natural, visible cracks showing the beautiful aging of the wood.

Dimensions: ca 80 x 12 x 12cm with the stand.
