Snuff bottles were used in the Chinese Qing Dynasty from the mid 1600’s until the beginning of the 19th century. They were made to hold powdered tobacco which was inhaled through the nose.
For the first hundred years, tobacco was very expensive in China so taking snuff was an exclusive habit which started in the imperial court, only accessible to the upper part of the imperial family and the most influential people.
A man would bring out his bottle when he was with other men and offer them some snuff. This was not only a way of sharing but also a way of showing off his beautiful bottle.
It wasn’t until the 19th century that snuff tobacco and bottles were accessible to the general population.
