Set of 2 Tribal Money Rings From Papua New Guinea
SYMBOLS OF WEALTH AND LOVE
This distinctive set of two traditional money rings comes from Papua New Guinea and is handcrafted from clam shell and natural resin. The central openings are traditionally drilled using bamboo, while the edges are smoothed with silica sand, following long-established techniques.
In Papua New Guinea, shell money rings historically served as a form of valuable currency and were especially associated with bride-price ceremonies and the acquisition of important goods. During a traditional bride-price ceremony, the groom's family would offer gifts such as pigs, food and valuable shell money to the bride's family as part of the exchange.
The set is displayed on black metal supports and comes with its story printed inside a beautiful envelope. The metal supports are individually handmade, so slight variations and natural imperfections may be present; these are characteristic of their artisanal production and make each set unique.
Dimensions including the metal supports: 24 and 31 cm high. Each money ring is approximately 13 cm in diameter.
