A SYMBOL OF RESPECT AND CONNECTION

This figure was made by hand in hardened sand by local artisans on the island of Java in Indonesia, known since antiquity for their exquisite carving techniques. It’s depicting a Buddhist monk with an Alms bowl, given to him at his initiation and being one of the most important symbols in his life.

Alms are money, food, or other goods given to people in poverty, considered an act of virtue or charity called Almsgiving. It’s a widespread practice across different religions and cultures. In Buddhism, Almsgiving is the respect given by a Buddhist to a Buddhist monk, nun or spiritually-developed person and being. It’s not considered charity, but a symbolic connection to the spiritual realm, showing humbleness and respect, connecting the human to the monk or nun. It’s believed to be the beginning of one's journey to Nirvana.

The statue comes complete on a black metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being handmade each piece is slightly different with natural imperfections.
