Dayak comb from Borneo
A SYMBOL OF PROTECTION AND BEAUTY
This piece was hand carved in teak wood by local artisans on the island of Borneo, made with ancient techniques and motifs. This is the only piece in our collection with this particular design.
Across the Indonesian archipellago wearing bold, decorative combs has been a popular tradition for a long time. The Dayaks are the native people of Borneo, with its first independent kingdom as early as the 12th century. Besides being skillful farmers, craftsmen and hunters, they were also one of the most feared warrior tribes in Southeast Asia. For centuries the Dayaks have made wood carvings in honor of Kaharingan, their animist religion until the 1900’s.
The comb comes complete with the blackened metal stand and its intriguing story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope.
