This wooden horse statue is carved by hand and comes from the island of Sumba in Indonesia.
In Sumba horses are considered to almost be at the same level as the ancestors who rule the universe.
Horses are used for many purposes: as the most important dowry in wedding rituals and as offerings during funeral ceremonies, allowing the dead to ride to its ancestors in the afterlife.
The amount of horses a family has represent it’s social status.
