A SYMBOL OF TEACHING
This beautiful set of Buddha’s hands is hand made in brass with black wooden bases and comes from Luang Prabang in Laos. In Buddhism and Hinduism different symbolic hand gestures, called Mudra’s, have different meanings.
This hand position with the tips of the thumb and index finger touching each other, forming a circle symbolizes the teaching phase of preaching in Buddhism. The circle formed by the thumb and index finger maintains the constant flow of energy, as there is no beginning or end, only perfection. It’s called Vitarka Mudra.
The term Vitarka mudra comes from the Sanskrit, vitarka, meaning “reasoning,” “consideration” or “deliberation”; and mudra, meaning “closure,” “mark” or “seal.”
