Ceremonial Topeng Mask From Sumba



This wooden mask was hand carved by local artisans on the island of Sumba in Indonesia, made as per ancient techniques and featuring some of the islands traditional carving motifs.
Topeng means mask in Indonesian.
People on Sumba have been making masks since ancient times, for harvest festivals, fertility rites, soul catching, death ceremonies and spiritual dances, initiation rites and exorcism rituals.
They are believed to scare off evil spirits and sickness as well as protecting from natural disasters like drought and floods.
It comes complete with a black metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope.
Being handmade each mask is slightly different.
