This wooden horse statue (Kuda means horse in Indonesian) was carved by hand by local artisans on the island of Sumba in Indonesia, made as per ancient techniques.

In Sumba horses are considered to be almost at the same level as the ancestors who rule the universe, being used for many purposes, the most important being as a dowry in wedding rituals and as offerings during funeral ceremonies, allowing the dead to ride to their ancestors in the afterlife. The amount of horses a family has represent its social status.

The statue comes complete with the black metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted, every piece is an original, with subtle variations in the finishing that highlight the natural beauty of the wood, including its organic imperfections and cracks. The handmade metal support has its own authentic character, with subtle imperfections and the potential to develop a natural patina over time.
