Large Antique Javanese Bronze Bust in Majapahit Style
A SYMBOL OF DIVINE PRESENCE
Made in Java at the beginning of the 1900s, this antique bronze bust reflects the classical style that developed during the Majapahit era, one of the most important periods in Indonesian history.
Figures like this represent divine or enlightened beings who played a central role in temple life and spiritual practice across Java. Crowns and jewelry symbolize their elevated status, while the calm expression reflects wisdom, balance, and inner clarity.
The Majapahit kingdom shaped art, architecture, and religion throughout the region. Even centuries later, artisans continued to draw inspiration from this tradition, preserving its distinctive forms in bronze sculpture.
Javanese metalworkers created pieces like this using the traditional lost-wax casting technique. The figure was first modeled in wax, then covered in clay before molten bronze alloy was poured into the mold. This method has been used for generations to capture fine details while maintaining the character of handmade work.
The sculpture is mounted on a thick black metal support and comes with its printed story enclosed in a refined envelope.
As a natural characteristic of bronze, the patina may continue to evolve subtly over time, developing gentle variations in tone that are part of the material’s authentic ageing process.
