Created by artisans on the island of Java, Indonesia, in the mid-20th century, this standing Buddha in traditional bronze alloy reflects a long lineage of sacred casting and devotional craftsmanship. The figure is depicted with both hands raised in the Abhaya Mudra, the ancient Sanskrit gesture of protection and fearlessness, with open palms facing outward.

This gesture has been used in Buddhist art for centuries to signify reassurance, spiritual authority, and the dispelling of fear. When shown with both hands raised, the symbolism is amplified, representing complete protection and composure.

Buddhism flourished in Java during the powerful Sailendra and Majapahit kingdoms (8th to 15th centuries). It was during this era that bronze casting of sacred figures developed through maritime trade and cultural exchange across Asia. Javanese craftsmen refined the traditional lost-wax casting technique, sculpting detailed wax models, forming clay molds, and casting molten metal to create enduring devotional sculptures. Each piece produced through this method remains individually cast.

Bronze alloys were historically chosen for temple and sacred figures for their durability, structural integrity, and ability to preserve fine detail. Over time, natural oxidation creates tonal variations across the surface, visible here in the aged green patina that has developed over decades.
