Created by artisans on the island of Java in the 1950’s, this striking piece in bronze
is a captivating blend of ancient heritage, meticulous craftsmanship and deep symbolism.
Buddhism began to flourish in Java at the time of ancient kingdoms Sailendra and Majapahit (8th to 15th centuries). This was also when the tradition to of making Buddha statues in bronze began, through trade and cultural exchange on the Silk Road. Javanese artisans learned how to use the lost-wax casting technique, sculpting intricate wax models, creating clay molds and casting molten bronze. This metal was chosen for its durability, ability to capture fine details and ensuring the statues' longevity and intricate beauty. These periods saw the creation of iconic temples like Borobudur, the globe’s largest Buddhist temple and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Buddha’s head is rich in symbolism, representing his enlightenment, wisdom and serenity.
The Buddha comes complete on a black metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. The handmade metal support carry its own authenticity, with subtle imperfections and the potential for a natural patina to emerge over time.
