This beautiful ensemble includes a set of cowrie shell necklaces from Papua New Guinea and a brass ceremonial cuff from Sumatra, each displayed on a blackened metal support.

The necklaces are handmade with cowrie shells embroidered onto crochet bases made from natural fibre. In Papua New Guinea, necklaces of this kind are used during ceremonies and are traditionally made for the individual wearer. Their rounded outer form symbolizes the universe, while the circular opening at the center is associated with the passage to eternal life. Cowrie shells have long held an important place in ceremonial traditions across Papua, where they have been valued for their spiritual significance and association with fertility, well-being, exchange, and social ties.

The brass cuff carries the spirit of Sumatra — an island known for strong traditions, expressive craftsmanship, and cultures where ornament and identity have long gone hand in hand.

Across many Sumatran communities, metal adornments have served as markers of presence, confidence, and belonging. The bold form and textured surface reveal traditional hammering and embossing techniques, allowing the warm brass to catch the light and giving the piece depth and a naturally sculptural character.

Being artisan crafted with natural and organic materials, each piece is slightly different, with subtle variations and natural imperfections that reflect the character of handmade work. The blackened metal supports may also show small irregularities and can develop a natural patina over time.
