GUARDIANS OF SUMBA

Sale price€860,31 EUR

This set of wooden masks was hand carved by local artisans on the island of Sumba in Indonesia, using traditional techniques and featuring geometric motifs inspired by the island’s rich carving heritage.

Topeng means “mask” in Indonesian. Across the Indonesian archipelago, masks have long held an important place in ritual, performance and spiritual traditions. On Sumba, masks have been created for generations and have been associated with harvest festivals, fertility rites, ceremonies surrounding life and death, spiritual dances and other ritual practices.

The striking faces and intricate carved patterns reflect a culture in which art, symbolism and the spiritual world have traditionally been closely intertwined. Masks have been believed to ward off evil spirits and sickness, and to offer protection against misfortune and natural forces such as drought and floods.

Artisan crafted in Sumba, each mask carries subtle variations in its carving, surface and finish, giving every piece its own individual character. Together, the two Topeng create a powerful sculptural presence and celebrate the distinctive artistic traditions of the island.

The suite comes complete with the black metal stands and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted, every piece is an original, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood with organic imperfections and cracks.  The handmade metal supports carry their own authenticity, with subtle imperfections and the potential for a natural patina to emerge over time. Books not included.

DIMENSIONS INCLUDING THE BLACKENED METAL SUPPORTS:

  • The large mask: around 94 x 37 x 21cm
  • The extra large mask: around 119 x 39 x 20cm
