Hand Carved Kaduma Statue from Sumba
A SYMBOL OF PROTECTION
This wooden figure is carved by hand and comes from the island of Sumba, made with a human form in honour of the Marapu (ancestral spirits), part of the animistic/ancestral religion in the region. The human figure is an invitation to the Marapu to move inside the statue, believed to protect ones home and to guide its owner through life.
The Marapu are believed to be the occupants of the eternal heaven, living in couples and leading a similar existence to men.
The statue comes complete with the black metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted, every piece is an original, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood with organic imperfections and cracks. The handmade metal support carries its own authenticity, with subtle imperfections and the potential for a natural patina to emerge over time.
Dimensions: ca 80 x 12 x 12cm with the stand.
