This exquisite mineral cast stone statue, depicting Buddha in meditation, was meticulously handcrafted by master artisans in Mojokerto, Java, using traditional carving techniques. The Javanese tradition of stone carving, dating back to the 8th–9th centuries, has produced some of the world’s most remarkable statues.
Buddha is depicted seated in meditation, with his hands resting gently in his lap in Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation. Traditionally associated with deep concentration, inner balance and the attainment of spiritual wisdom, this ancient mudra reinforces the statue’s serene and contemplative presence.
Buddhism, founded between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE, is now the fourth-largest religion globally. It reached Java through ancient trade routes, leaving a profound influence on the island's spiritual and artistic heritage.
The statue comes mounted on a black metal support and includes its story printed out inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted, every piece is unique and may show subtle variations that reflect the character of handmade work. The metal support is also handcrafted and may display small irregularities, adding authenticity and allowing a natural patina to develop over time.
Dimensions with the metal stand: around 41 × 23 × 15 cm.
