ANTIQUE BRONZE BUDDHA
A SYMBOL OF ENLIGHTENMENT AND INNNER PEACE
A gentle touch to the earth is a powerful gesture. Yet across centuries, it has carried one of Buddhism’s most enduring messages.
Crafted in Java during the early 20th century, this antique bronze Buddha reflects a tradition of spiritual art that has shaped the island for generations. Seated in meditation, the figure displays the Bhumisparsha Mudra, one of the most recognized gestures in Buddhist iconography and a symbol of enlightenment, steadfastness, and overcoming adversity.
The Bhumisparsha Mudra, or the "earth-witness" gesture, represents the precise moment the Buddha attained awakening under the Bodhi tree. By reaching down to touch the ground with his right hand, he called upon the earth itself to witness his resolve and validate his spiritual triumph over temptation. It reminds us of the strength, grounding, and inner resilience required to find true clarity.
The Buddha’s serene expression, harmonious proportions, and flowing robe reveal the skill of the artisans who created it. Cast in bronze using traditional techniques, the sculpture features a rich, aged patina interwoven with delicate remnants of original gilding, adding warmth, depth, and character to the surface.
For centuries, Buddhism played an important role in the cultural and artistic life of Java. Sculptures such as this continue that legacy, preserving traditions that celebrate reflection, compassion, and the pursuit of inner understanding.
The Buddha comes complete on its blackened metal support and with its printed story inside a beautiful envelope.
