This pristine pair of wooden sculptures was hand carved in wood by Dayak artisans on the island of Borneo, made as per ancient tradition sometime during the 1980's. They are known as Hampatong, portraying an ancestral couple and is the only set of its kind in our collection today.

The dayak are one of the native groups of Borneo. Their indigenous religion is called Kaharingan, which is a form of animism and the oldest belief in the area, practiced by many until the 19th century. Like most of Borneo's people, the Dayak would carve and place human or animal figures by the entrances of their buildings and along the paths leading from their villages to the river to protect from dangerous spirits entering the community.

Dimensions: Heights 47,5 and 44cm. Each statue is wide and deep 8 x 8cm with the metal stand. The set comes complete with blackened metal stands and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope.
