These special coins called Pis bolong come from the island of Bali in Indonesia, made by local artisans with the ancient technique of sand casting.

The set is crafted with a sacred alloy called Panca Datu meaning the five strengths of life, consisting of gold, silver, copper, bronze and iron. Each of the metals have a divine meaning and potency, symbolising the power of the gods. In Balinese culture it is believed that if we own a pis bolong life will be beautiful. The coins are decorated with the Balinese words: Sa, Ba, Ta, A, representing the strength in the 4 corner stones of the compass.

The Pis Bolong originated from ancient China and were brought to Indonesia centuries ago. They were made with a central hole for stringing together, making them easy to carry and use for trade. Over time, the Balinese adopted and adapted these coins into their spiritual and cultural practices, embedding them with profound local meaning. In Balinese rituals, Pis Bolong are believed to carry magical and divine energies, making them an integral part of ceremonies and offerings to attract blessings, prosperity, and protection. Still today they are placed in temple shrines, buried in the foundations of homes to ward off evil, or used during life ceremonies like weddings and births. They are also worn as amulets, carried to bring balance, harmony, and good fortune to the wearer.
