Some stories have been told for more than a thousand years. Few have inspired as many generations as the Ramayana.

Created in the early 20th century, this antique bronze sculpture portrays Rama, the legendary prince and hero of one of Asia's most beloved epics. Revered across Indonesia, India, Thailand, Cambodia, and beyond, Rama is celebrated as the embodiment of honor, courage, loyalty, and righteousness.

Captured in a dynamic archer's stance, the figure conveys a sense of focus and determination. Bow in hand, Rama stands ready to defend justice and uphold the moral order that lies at the heart of the Ramayana. Every element of the composition reflects the qualities that have made him a symbol of noble leadership for centuries.

The Ramayana arrived in Java more than a thousand years ago through trade, cultural exchange, and the spread of Hindu traditions across Southeast Asia. Its stories became deeply woven into Javanese culture, inspiring temple reliefs, shadow puppet performances, court literature, and works of sacred art. Even today, the tale remains one of the most enduring cultural treasures of the region.

What makes this piece especially compelling is its surface. The bronze has acquired a richly textured patina over time, creating layers of color and character that speak of age, history, and craftsmanship. These natural variations give the sculpture a distinctive presence.

The statue comes complete on its blackened metal support and with its printed story inside a refined envelope. As a natural characteristic of bronze, the patina may continue to evolve subtly over time, developing gentle variations in tone that are part of the material’s authentic ageing process.
