A SYMBOL OF RESILIENCE

This gorgeous set of oars was made by local artisans
on Kalimantan in Indonesia in the beginning of the 1900’s, crafted in Ulin wood, native to Borneo.

For many years these oars have travelled the waters of the island before making their way to us, and to you! The tradition of oar making in the region dates back to antiquity,
beginning with a careful selection of the Ulin tree, often with rituals to honor the spirit of the tree. Ulinwood was chosen for its exceptional hardness, density, and resistance.
Only mature trees were selected to maintain the ecological balance.
The carving process required great skill and precision to create paddles that were balanced in the water.

Oars were essential for navigating the extensive river systems of Kalimantan for fishing and trade. They were also important elements in rituals, dances and ceremonies,
especially during weddings where canoes symbolized the union and journey of the couple. Owning a well-crafted ironwood oar could be a symbol of status within the community, often considered valuable heirlooms, passed down through generations.

The set comes complete on black metal stands and their story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. The handmade metal supports carry their own authenticity, with subtle imperfections and the potential for a natural patina to emerge over time.
