Large Kuda Wooden Horse Statue from Sumba
A SYMBOL OF DIVINE PROSPERITY
This striking Kuda statue was carved by hand by local artisans on the island of Sumba, Indonesia, using traditional techniques. In Indonesian, kuda means “horse.”
In Sumbanese tradition, horses hold deep cultural significance and are closely associated with ancestors and a family’s social standing. They play an important role in wedding exchanges and ceremonial traditions, reflecting prestige, continuity and the enduring connection between families and their ancestors.
Each statue is individually crafted, giving every piece its own distinctive character. Variations in finish, organic imperfections and natural cracks reveal the character of the wood and make each sculpture unique.
The statue is presented on a handmade blackened metal stand and comes with its story, printed and enclosed in an envelope. The support may show slight irregularities and develop a natural patina over time.
Approximate dimensions including the stand: 73 cm high × 42 cm wide × 18 cm deep.
