Set of 2 antique rice farmer figurines from Java
A SYMBOL OF PROSPERITY AND LIFE
These beautiful statues were crafted in stone by local artisans sometimes during the 1920’s on the lush island of Java.
Here rice farming blossomed into sophisticated art form in the 8th century. The breathtaking landscape, adorned with emerald paddies called Sawa, was meticulously cultivated by ancient Javanese farmers. In the 9th century Bali introduced a masterful irrigation system, the subak, which was soon adopted in Java. This communal network represented a marvel of collaborative engineering, where farmers worked together to distribute water across their rice fields. The subak was not just a practical solution but a harmonious blend of spiritual and agricultural practices, intertwining local beliefs with everyday life.
Rice, central to both Javanese and Balinese cultures, holds profound significance. In Java, rice farming is more than just a means of sustenance; it is woven into the social and spiritual fabric of the community. The reverence for rice is embodied in ancient rituals and ceremonies, reflecting its status as a symbol of prosperity and life.
