The Dewi Tara sculpture was handcrafted in mineral cast stone by master artisans in Mojokerto, Java, using traditional techniques. The art of stone carving has been practised and perfected on the island since the 8th–9th century, producing some of the most remarkable sculptural traditions in Southeast Asia.

Dewi Tara is revered as a goddess of wisdom and compassion in both Buddhist and Hindu traditions. She is often associated with motherhood, the forces of nature, and a protective, nurturing presence. Tara derives from a Sanskrit word meaning “star” and symbolises the light of the soul.

The special coins known as Pis Bolong come from Bali, Indonesia, where they are made by local artisans using the traditional technique of sand casting.

The set is crafted with a sacred alloy called Panca Datu, meaning the five strengths of life, consisting of gold, silver, copper, bronze and iron. Each metal carries a divine meaning and potency, symbolising the power of the gods. In Balinese culture, Pis Bolong are associated with the belief that their presence can bring a beautiful life. The coins are decorated with the Balinese syllables Sa, Ba, Ta and A, representing strength in the four cardinal directions.

Pis Bolong originated in ancient China and were brought to Indonesia centuries ago. Their central hole allowed them to be strung together for trade and transport. Over time, the Balinese adopted and transformed these coins into objects of spiritual and cultural significance. In Balinese rituals, Pis Bolong are believed to carry sacred energies and are used in ceremonies and offerings associated with blessings, prosperity and protection. They may be placed in temple shrines, buried in the foundations of homes, used during life ceremonies such as weddings and births, or worn as amulets to invite balance, harmony and good fortune.

The set comes complete with the blackened metal stands and the individual stories printed for you inside a beautiful envelope. As each piece is artisan crafted, subtle variations and organic imperfections are part of its character. The handmade metal supports may also show slight irregularities and develop a natural patina over time.
