A SYMBOL OF ENLIGHTENMENT

This exquisite mineral cast stone statue was meticulously handcrafted by master artisans in Mojokerto, Java, drawing on the island’s centuries-old tradition of sacred sculpture. Javanese stone carving flourished as early as the 8th and 9th centuries, leaving an extraordinary artistic legacy that can still be seen in Java’s ancient temples and Buddhist monuments.

Buddha is depicted seated in serene meditation, his composed expression and cross-legged posture conveying stillness and inner balance. His right hand reaches downward in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the symbolic “earth-touching” gesture, while his left hand rests gently in his lap. This important Buddhist mudra recalls the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment, when he called upon the earth to bear witness to his awakening.

Buddhism reached Java through the ancient maritime trade routes connecting South and Southeast Asia, profoundly influencing the island’s spiritual and artistic heritage. This statue continues that rich sculptural tradition, bringing together symbolism, craftsmanship and the quiet sense of contemplation associated with Buddhist art.

The statue comes mounted on a black metal support and includes its story printed out inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted, every piece is unique and may show subtle variations that reflect the character of handmade work. The metal support is also handcrafted and may display small irregularities, adding authenticity and allowing a natural patina to develop over time.

Dimensions with the metal stand: around 39 x 20 x 15cm
