Large Hornbill sculpture from Borneo
A SYMBOL OF GUIDANCE AND GOOD LUCK
This beautiful sculpture is hand carved in wood as per ancient techniques by local artisans on the island of Borneo.
It’s painted with natural pigments recalling the colors of the striking Hornbill bird which is found in tropical Asia, Melanesia and Africa. It has a strong symbolism and meaning for the tribes of Borneo, believed to be the king of all birds, acting as the intermediary between Man and the Gods. It’s thought that when people die hornbills come into their souls, guiding them. Having a hornbill fly over a home was a sign of good fortune to arrive. They’re incorporated into many sides of the local culture, in art, ceremonial dresses, and dances.
The sculpture comes complete with a black metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being handmade each bird is slightly different and can have some natural, visible cracks as beautiful signs of the aging of the wood.
Dimensions: 111 x 60 x 39cm stand included. The head of the bird can turn.
