Vintage Naga Morsarang from Sumatra

 This beautiful vessel is known as a naga morsarang and was hand carved by Batak artisans on the island of Sumatra, made with ancient techniques sometimes during the 1960's. It's the only piece of its kind in our collection today.

It consists of the hollow horn of a water buffalo with the earth deity Boraspati Ni Tano depicted in the form of a lizard, a reoccurring motif on ritual objects from the area. The pointed end is carved in the shape of a seated human figure while the wider, open end is plugged with a wooden stopper that depicts the Singa, (a zoomorphic underworld deity) The human figure represent a mythical character. Among the Batak people, the datu, or ritual specialist, required a variety of containers made of different materials to carry his supernatural and powerful potions.

Dimensions: 51 x 33 x 15cm with the metal support. The vessel comes complete with the blackened metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope.
