Papua Tribal Jewellery: Tradition and Contemporary Elegance

Across Papua, communities have developed distinct traditions of body adornment using locally available and traded materials. Shells, seeds, fibre, bone and teeth can be assembled into necklaces, pectorals and ceremonial ornaments whose meaning depends on the people, place and occasion connected with them.
MATERIALS, STATUS AND EXCHANGE
Adornment can communicate identity, social relationships, wealth, exchange and participation in ceremonies. Techniques and symbolism vary widely, so each object deserves to be understood through its specific origin whenever that information is available.
COWRIE SHELLS
Cowrie shells circulated widely as adornment, exchange valuables and markers of status in many parts of Africa, Asia and the Pacific. In Papua, they have been incorporated into necklaces and ceremonial objects for generations. Their smooth pale surfaces create a striking contrast with fibre, dark seeds and natural patina.
Large cowrie shell necklaces have a strong sculptural presence and can be displayed on stands as works of art while preserving their identity as wearable adornment.
CARDIIDAE AND ABALONE SHELLS
Cardiidae, commonly known as cockle shells, are recognized by their rounded form and ribbed exterior. Their texture gives necklaces a rhythmic, architectural quality.
Abalone shell is valued for its iridescent surface, which shifts between green, blue and rose tones. Shell ornaments could also circulate through trade and exchange networks, giving the material significance beyond its beauty.
FROM ADORNMENT TO CONTEMPORARY DISPLAY
Presented on a discreet metal stand, a necklace or pectoral becomes a sculptural object without losing the story of its original use. A respectful display keeps information about origin, material and cultural context together with the piece.
