Large Picture from the Vincenzo Schettino Collection (1898 - 1978)

This striking photo was collected by Italian soldier Vicenzo Schettino (1898 - 1978) who spent seven years in Italian Oriental Africa, a territory that included Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia.

The Italian adventure in Africa started in the end of the 18th century and ended in 1936 with the mission to civilize the primitive population. 

During those years tens of thousands of Italians migrated to Africa every year, drawn by the exotic nature of the stunning continent and hopeful to find their place in the sun.

During the time it was said that "possibly no other European state has spent as much money, energy and manpower in a colony as Italy during its brief possession of Ethiopia."

Thousands of Kilometres of roads, schools, an administrative organisation, a sanitary system, industries, airports and 1450 public offices - all to modernise the territory.

This high quality print is recently done by his nephew who carries the same name.
