Wooden figure from Sumba
A SYMBOL OF SPIRITUALITY AND GUIDANCE
This beautiful statue was carved by hand by local artisans on the island of Sumba in Indonesia, made with ancient techniques. Sumba was once known as Sandalwood island, famous for its prized, aromatic wood.
The figure is carved with a human form in honour of the Marapu (ancestral spirits). Marapu is the animistic religion practiced in Sumba, and it’s spirits are believed to be the occupants of the eternal heaven, living in couples and leading a similar existence to men. One of these couples are believed to be the ancestor of the Sumbanese.
The statue comes complete with a blackened metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted each statue is slightly different and each has natural, visible cracks as beautiful signs of the aging of the wood.
Dimensions: 112 X 18 X 18cm with the metal support
