This beautiful ensemble includes a set of large cowrie shell necklaces and Buddha statue, complete with the blackened metal supports.

The necklaces come from Papua New Guinea are is handmade with Cowrie shells that have been embroidered onto crochet bases made out of natural fibre. In Papua these types of necklaces are used during ceremonies and are custom-made for each person. Its round outside shape symbolizes the universe,
while the circular hole in the center is a symbol of the opening to eternal life. It is believed to bring the wearer a happy life and protection. Natural seashells have always played a crucial role in ceremonial traditions in Papua. With their strong mythological importance they were considered to be the links between the human and the spiritual world, bringing fertility and well-being. In the past, shells traveled on long pathways through the Asian Pacific, used as exchange items or currency and for creating ties and relationships between people.

The Buddha statue is crafted by hand in hardened sand by local artisans on the island of Java in Indonesia, known since antiquity for their exquisite carving techniques. It’s depicting Buddha in prayer. Buddhism originated sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE, and is the world's fourth-largest religion. Buddhism is the second oldest religion in Indonesia and arrived from India in the 2nd century through the Silk Road. 

The suite comes with the stories of the artefacts printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted with organic materials, each piece is slightly different containing beautiful, natural imperfections. Books not included.
