Set of 2 ceremonial Ladle spoons from Sumba
A SYMBOL OF PURITY
This beautiful set was handcrafted on the island of Sumba in Indonesia, made by local artisans in wood and coconut shell. The tradition to make ladle for ceremonial purposes dates back to antiquity, used in rites of purification.
The spoons are carved with human forms at the top in honor of the Marapu (ancestral spirits). Marapu is the animistic religion practiced in Sumba, and its spirits are believed to be the occupants of the eternal heaven, living in couples and leading a similar existence to men. One of these couples are believed to be the ancestor of the Sumbanese.
The set comes complete with blackened metal stands and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope. Being artisan crafted each piece is slightly different with natural imperfections and cracks as beautiful signs of aging of the wood.
