A STELE FROM SUMBA
A SYMBOL OF FAITH AND HONOR
This statue was hand carved in stone by local artisans on the island of Sumba in Indonesia. Stele like this are memorial figures and funerary posts, made to commemorate with traditions dating back to antiquity. In the old days, funeral rites of Sumbanese kings were epic events, with sacrifices, rituals and treasures to accompany the dead. Sumba is renowned for its megalithic stone monuments and large stone slab tables, which were raised during ceremonies to honor departed members of the nobility and ancestral lines.
The statue comes complete with a blackened metal stand and its story printed out for you inside a beautiful envelope.
